Credit by Examination

Advanced Placement Program (AP)

This program, administered by the College Board, is designed for college-bound high school students who wish to demonstrate their readiness for courses that first-year college students typically do not enroll in. College credit is awarded to students who earn sufficiently high grades on the examinations covering basic first-year course subject matter. The university encourages high school students to enroll in these courses and to take available examinations in one or more subjects.

It is the student's responsibility to have official grade reports sent from College Board to the Office of Admissions before credit can be awarded.

International Baccalaureate Program (IB)

The University of Illinois Chicago will award credit on the basis of scores from several International Baccalaureate examinations: anthropology, biological sciences, chemistry, Latin, economics, English, French, geography, German, history, music, philosophy, physics, psychology and Spanish. Students who wish to have such examination scores evaluated should request an official transcript from the International Baccalaureate program or have their high school send an official score transcript to the Office of Admissions (M/C 018), The University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, IL 60607.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

UIC awards credit on the basis of scores earned on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). When seeking credit for a CLEP exam taken at another institution, your official score will be evaluated on UIC's credit-granting policy.

CLEP credit will not count toward general education credit, university writing, quantitative reasoning, foreign language, residency, major, or minor requirements. A student cannot take a CLEP exam in a subject in which they have earned credit. Three elective credit hours will be awarded per exam as detailed in the University Catalog. A maximum of 30 credit hours is allowed.

State Seal of Biliteracy

UIC will award credit to students earning the State Seal of Biliteracy beginning in Fall 2017.  Students who present appropriate documentation of the seal to their advisor within three years of high school graduation will be awarded UIC proficiency credit.
